Imagine this:
You’ve just finished a ride.
You dismount at the far end of the arena.
Before walking your horse to the gate, you stand quietly beside them, near their shoulder.
As you focus on your breath and slow it down, you notice their head lowering, their eye softening… and then they turn their head gently towards you.
That’s not just relaxation — that’s true connection.
And it happened to me after riding a school horse who was commonly known as a “grumpy old man" (that's us in he image above)

Being prey animals, horses are highly sensitive to the energy around them.
It’s part of their survival instinct — they’re constantly making quick assessments about their environment to determine if it’s safe.
If you’ve been around horses for long enough, you’ve probably noticed how they can read your energy. Yes, body language and tone of voice play a role, but so does the energy you’re giving off — the “frequency” you’re resonating at.

This is why being calm, grounded, and present matters so much. When we show up in that state, our horses feel more at ease… and our bond naturally deepens.
Here are a few ideas to help make sure your energy is working for your horse, not against them.
Before seeing your horse
- Let go of the day.
Take a few minutes to release any worries or stresses. You could simply sit quietly, focus on your breath, and notice how you’re feeling. As you exhale, imagine letting go of the day’s tension.
You might also try a short guided meditation — there are many free ones available online.

2. Ground yourself energetically.
One way to do this is to visualise a bright white light coming down from the universe, slowly moving through your body and filling every cell — from your head and shoulders, down through your torso, hips, legs, and feet.
You may prefer to imagine strong tree roots growing from your root chakra (located between the perineum and tailbone) down through your legs and out through your feet, spreading deep into the earth to anchor you.
If you’re sitting, you might picture a heavy anchor dropping from your root chakra deep into the earth’s core.
The method doesn’t matter as much as the result — you want to feel calm, centred, and present. This is the state horses enjoy being around us.

With your horse
1. Be present in the moment.
It’s easy to slip into “doing mode” — feeding, mucking out, riding to achieve goals. But horses also value when we simply "be" with them.
2. Breathe together.
Stand beside your horse, place one hand on their mid-back and the other on the side of their ribcage, and just breathe. See if you can match your breathing with theirs. Even two minutes of this mindful connection can have a calming effect on you both.
By becoming aware of your own energy and intentionally shifting into a calm, grounded state, you’re creating the safest, most welcoming space possible for your horse.
Over time, this simple practice can strengthen your connection more than you might expect.
Until next time...
